Jallikattu: Spectator gored to death in Karur 


A tragic incident marred the annual Jallikattu event held at Rachandar Thirumalai (RT Malai) in Karur on Thursday, as a 65-year-old spectator was fatally gored by a bull. The event, which saw the participation of 733 bulls and 372 tamers from districts like Karur, Tiruchy, and Pudukkottai, also left 55 individuals, including tamers and bull owners, injured.
Event Highlights and Tragic Incident
The event began with an oath-taking ceremony by the tamers, followed by the release of a bull belonging to the Karaiyuran temple to mark the commencement. The event was flagged off by Tamil Nadu Minister V. Senthilbalaji.
Amidst the excitement, Kulanthaivel, a 65-year-old spectator from Kulumani near Srirangam in Tiruchy, went to a secluded spot near the gallery. Unfortunately, a bull running amok in the arena gored him on the neck. Though he was rushed to Tiruchy Government Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
In addition, 55 individuals, including six tamers and 12 bull owners, sustained injuries during the event and are undergoing treatment.
Despite the tragic turn of events, the competition saw impressive performances by tamers and bulls alike.
Best Tamer: Karthik from Erumaipatti in Namakkal tamed 21 bulls and was awarded a two-wheeler.
Second Prize: Sudarsan from Lalgudi in Tiruchy tamed 17 bulls and also received a two-wheeler.
In the bull category: First Prize: A car in the name of Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin was awarded to Kathiravan from Madurai for his bull’s exceptional performance.
Second Prize: A refrigerator was given to Prabakaran from RT Malai for his bull’s performance.
The tragic death and numerous injuries have reignited concerns about safety measures at Jallikattu events. While the tradition holds cultural significance, the risks involved call for stringent protocols to ensure the safety of both participants and spectators.
The event concluded with a mix of celebration and mourning, as the community grappled with the loss of a life amidst the fervor of tradition.
