In a significant move to prioritize environmental conservation and heritage protection, the Union Government has decided to annul the auction of the Nayakkarpatti tungsten mineral block in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai district. This decision comes after extensive deliberations and representations highlighting the ecological and cultural significance of the region.Union Minister of Coal and Mines, Kishan Reddy, held a meeting with a delegation from Madurai on January 22, 2025, in his chamber in New Delhi. The delegation expressed concerns over the inclusion of the Arittapatti Biodiversity Heritage Site within the auctioned mineral block. They pointed out that the area not only holds ecological importance but is also home to several cultural heritage sites.
It may be recalled that the Ministry of Mines had previously announced the auction of the Nayakkarpatti tungsten block in December 2024. However, this decision faced backlash as various representations were submitted opposing the auction due to the presence of the Biodiversity Heritage Site within the block area.
Acknowledging the gravity of these concerns, Minister Kishan Reddy assured the delegation that the government remains committed to safeguarding biodiversity and upholding traditional rights. Following detailed discussions, the Centre decided to cancel the auction, emphasizing the importance of conserving the ecological balance and cultural heritage of the region.
This decision has been widely welcomed by environmentalists and local communities who had been advocating for the protection of Arittapatti. It underscores the governmentâs resolve to balance developmental aspirations with ecological preservation and heritage conservation.
