Kudumbasthan: review

Fun under the sun
Kudumbasthan, crafted by the creative minds behind the popular YouTube channel Nakkalites, is a delightful comedy-drama that beautifully captures the essence of middle-class life. Packed with humor, heart, and relatable struggles, the film is a wholesome entertainer that resonates deeply with its audience.
The story follows Naveen, a graphic designer whose life takes a downturn when he loses his job, coinciding with the news of his wife Vennila’s pregnancy. What ensues is a rollercoaster of challenges, from financial misadventures to ego clashes with his pompous brother-in-law, Rajendran. The intercaste marriage between Naveen and Vennila sets the stage for familial tensions, but the film avoids cliched romance, focusing instead on the trials of middle-class survival.
Manikandan shines as Naveen, portraying vulnerability and humor with equal finesse. His struggles are not only relatable but also serve as a mirror to the societal pressures faced by many. Guru Somasundaram as Rajendran is the film’s standout, delivering a nuanced performance that oscillates between humor and overbearing arrogance, making every scene with him memorable.
The film’s narrative is peppered with laugh-out-loud moments, including Naveen’s misguided ventures into a bakery business and real estate. These misadventures, while hilarious, underscore the pressures of maintaining middle-class pride and the lengths to which one can go to preserve it. The family gatherings, filled with awkward silences and unspoken judgments, are portrayed with a sharp eye for detail and cultural authenticity.
However, the film’s two-and-a-half-hour runtime feels slightly stretched, with a few scenes that could have been trimmed for better pacing. Yet, the well-placed humor and emotional depth keep the audience engaged throughout.
Kudumbasthan is more than just a comedy; it’s a celebration of resilience, family bonds, and the importance of staying grounded. With its endearing characters and poignant message, the film strikes a perfect balance between laughter and life lessons. It’s a must-watch for anyone who enjoys heartfelt storytelling wrapped in humor.
