This project has been designed to integrate metro rail construction with an elevated road, enhancing connectivity and reducing congestion along the corridor.
Earlier, the Tamil Nadu government had directed CMRL to revise the DPR to ensure seamless integration of metro rail and the elevated road. The revised plan now places the metro corridor at Level 2 and the elevated road at Level 1, ensuring efficient utilization of space and better traffic management.
The proposed extension will cover a distance of 15.46 km and pass through major locations such as Pallavaram, Chrompet, Tambaram, Perungalathur, and Vandalur. This will significantly improve connectivity between Kilambakkam Bus Terminal, Chennai Airport, and Tambaram Railway Station, three of the city’s major transport hubs.
The project will feature 13 elevated stations, allowing commuters to access key transit points conveniently. The estimated completion cost for the entire extension, including the elevated road, stands at ₹9,335 crores.
This initiative is expected to ease traffic congestion along the Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road and provide a seamless travel experience for thousands of daily commuters.
The metro extension to Kilambakkam will be a major boost for public transport, especially benefiting residents of South Chennai and commuters traveling to and from the newly developed Kilambakkam Bus Terminal.
