Revitalisation of 13 Chennai lakes to be Completed by Dec

The revitalisation of 13 lakes across Chennai is set to be completed by December 2025, according to Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR & CE), P.D. Sekarbabu. The minister, who also serves as the Chairperson of the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), recently inspected the ongoing restoration work at Kolathur Lake.
Currently, revitalisation efforts are underway in nine lakes, with significant progress in Alandur Lake, where space is being prepared for a sewage treatment plant.
The CMDA has allocated ₹250 crore for the restoration of major lakes, including Perumbakkam, Velachery, Retteri, Adambakkam, Puzhal, and Porur. Minister Sekarbabu emphasized that the project aims to improve water storage, prevent flooding, and create recreational spaces for residents, with plans to develop parks around the lakes in the future.
A key aspect of the project is the increase in Kolathur Lake’s storage capacity, which is expected to prevent flooding in the Red Hills area. Authorities are also considering the creation of a new drain to enhance water flow.
During the inspection, officials identified 81 encroachments along the lake’s canal. The government has decided to relocate affected residents to Moolakothalam, following alternative housing arrangements as per the Chief Minister’s orders.
With these efforts, Chennai’s water bodies are set to regain their ecological and functional significance, improving urban flood management and offering better public spaces.
