The Meteorological Department has forecasted above-normal temperatures in Tamil Nadu over the next four days, with temperatures expected to rise 2 to 3 degrees Celsius higher than usual. In response, the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine (DPH) has issued a health advisory urging the public to take precautions against the heat.Public Health Recommendations
The DPH advises people to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, ORS, and homemade drinks like lemon water, buttermilk, and fresh fruit juices with a pinch of salt. It also recommends consuming water-rich fruits and vegetables while avoiding direct sunlight.
People are encouraged to remain indoors in well-ventilated spaces, keep windows and curtains closed during the day to block heat, and open them at night for better airflow. Outdoor activities should be planned during cooler hours of the day.
Special Care for Vulnerable Groups
Extra precautions are recommended for infants, young children, pregnant women, the elderly, outdoor workers, individuals with heart conditions, mental health issues, and pre-existing illnesses. Regular monitoring is advised for those living alone.
Guidelines for Outdoor Workers
Outdoor workers are urged to limit sun exposure, avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours, take frequent breaks in cool areas, and drink water every 20 minutes. If symptoms like dizziness, headaches, or heat stress occur, immediate medical attention should be sought.
General Public Advisory
People are advised not to step outside between 12 PM and 3 PM, avoid alcohol, tea, coffee, carbonated soft drinks, and sugary beverages, and never leave children or pets in parked vehicles as interior temperatures can rise dangerously high.
With Tamil Nadu experiencing rising temperatures, following these guidelines can help prevent heat-related illnesses and ensure public safety during the hot spell.
