With temperatures soaring past 40°C in Chennai, air-conditioners have become essential for surviving the harsh summer months. But experts warn that without proper maintenance, these cooling systems can become energy guzzlers and health hazards.
Clean Filters, Cooler Air
“The simplest and most important step is cleaning the filters,” says S. Mohan, a service technician with over 15 years of experience in AC servicing in Chennai. “Dust-clogged filters reduce airflow, strain the compressor, and increase electricity bills. For homes in Chennai, filters should be cleaned at least once every two weeks during peak summer.”
Schedule Timely Servicing
Many residents make the mistake of turning on their ACs after months of inactivity without a professional check-up. “A pre-summer service ensures your unit is in top shape,” says Priya Rajan, manager at a popular appliance service center in T. Nagar. “Technicians can detect gas leaks, clean condenser coils, and check for worn-out components that may lead to breakdowns.”
Optimal Temperature Saves Power
Keeping your AC at 24–26°C not only ensures comfort but also conserves energy. “Setting the temperature too low won’t cool the room faster; it only overworks the system,” explains Dr. Karthik Subramanian, an energy consultant in Chennai. “Pairing AC use with ceiling fans improves circulation and reduces the load on the unit.”
Check Outdoor Units
In apartments and independent homes across Chennai, outdoor units are often placed in dusty or sun-exposed locations. “Make sure there’s enough ventilation around the outdoor unit,” says Mohan. “Remove dry leaves, cobwebs, or debris that can obstruct heat release. A shaded unit also functions more efficiently.”
Prevent Water Leaks
Frequent complaints during Chennai’s humid summers involve water dripping from AC units. “This usually happens when the drain pipe is blocked,” notes Priya. “It’s easily preventable with regular maintenance.”
Avoid DIY Repairs
Many homeowners attempt to fix AC issues themselves, which can worsen the problem. “Electrical components in ACs are sensitive. It’s best to rely on trained professionals,” cautions Dr. Karthik.
Chennai-Specific Caution
Given the city’s coastal climate, salt and humidity can corrode parts faster. “Use anti-corrosive coating sprays and opt for copper condenser models, which last longer in places like Chennai,” advises Mohan.
As the heatwave continues, timely care and smart usage of air-conditioners can keep your home comfortable without skyrocketing your electricity bill. As Dr. Karthik aptly puts it, “A well-maintained AC is not a luxury in Chennai—it’s a necessity that demands respect.”
