Widespread rainfall in TN: Chennai records heaviest showers

Tamil Nadu has experienced widespread rainfall over the past few days, with several districts receiving significant precipitation. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy rains are expected to continue in parts of the state until May 20.

In Chennai, the southern neighborhoods witnessed the heaviest downpours. Data from the TN-SMART portal indicates that Kannagi Nagar recorded the highest rainfall at 43.5 mm, followed by Okkiyam Thoraipakkam with 37.2 mm, and Medavakkam with 32.4 mm. Other areas like Pallikaranai, Neelankarai, and Sholinganallur also reported substantial rainfall.

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for several districts, including Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, and Thanjavur, forecasting heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.

In Madurai, heavy rains and strong winds led to the uprooting of around 20 trees, causing damage to roads and minor property damage. Fire and rescue teams were deployed to clear debris and restore access in affected areas.

Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and take necessary precautions during this period of inclement weather.
