Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has announced that the much-anticipated Koyambedu to Chennai Trade Centre stretch, part of Phase-II Corridor 5, is expected to be completed by June 2026. This route will connect key localities such as Alapakkam, Valasaravakkam, Karambakkam, and Alwarthirunagar, offering commuters seamless travel with multiple interchange options. The announcement follows a successful trial run conducted on June 6 between Porur Junction and Poonamallee Bypass. Speaking about the progress, CMRL Managing Director M.A. Siddique confirmed that work is progressing steadily and the extension from Porur to Power House and Koyambedu to Alapakkam will also be completed within the next year. The initial trial runs were conducted at speeds of 20–25 kmph, which will be gradually increased to 90 kmph as part of safety and performance testing. So far, six train sets have arrived, and testing of the signalling system is expected to begin soon. Despite some construction challenges between Karayanchavadi and Kattupakkam due to a proposed flyover, officials remain confident about the timelines. Station works between Poonamallee Bypass and Porur Junction are expected to be completed within the next three months. Although the new trains are driverless by design, operators will be present onboard during the initial phase. Recruitment and training of operators is currently underway and will continue through December 2025. Commuters can expect the first operational segment, from Poonamallee Bypass to Porur Junction, to open by December 2025, offering a major boost to public transport access in the western suburbs of Chennai.
