The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced a major initiative to improve Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) infrastructure in its schools and health centres. As part of this effort, the civic body has floated a tender worth ₹96 lakh to carry out WASH-related renovation and upgrade works in 66 Corporation schools and 7 urban primary health centres (UPHCs). This project comes under the WASH campaign and the Integrated Urban Flood Management for the Chennai-Kosasthalaiyar Basin Project. According to GCC officials, the planned works include the construction of 49 new toilets, repair of 6 existing toilets, installation of 37 new urinals, and improvement of plumbing and drainage systems. The project also includes setting up 108 new hand-wash facilities across the selected schools. In addition, the civic body plans to install hand-wash stations and reverse osmosis (RO) drinking water units in 17 UPHCs across the city to ensure better hygiene and clean drinking water access. The selected contractor will be required to follow the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) guidelines and execute electrical, sanitary, and other related services. The project duration is fixed at 549 days from the start date. Within 10 days of signing the agreement, the contractor must submit a detailed work plan that includes timelines for material procurement, excavation, construction, quality control, and commissioning, with all necessary approvals taken before commencing work. The initiative aims to improve hygiene and health standards for students and the public, while also addressing urban sanitation and water management issues.
