The Japan Coast Guard Ship (JCGS) Itsukushima arrived at Chennai Port on Monday as part of its ‘Global Ocean Voyage Training’ programme, marking a significant moment in maritime diplomacy and cooperation between India and Japan. The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) welcomed the visiting Japanese vessel with a traditional ceremonial reception. Commanded by Captain Naoki Mizoguchi, JCGS Itsukushima’s arrival underscores the close and evolving relationship between the two maritime forces, especially in the strategically vital Indo-Pacific region.
In a statement, the ICG emphasized that the visit reflects “the deep and enduring bond” between the Indian and Japanese Coast Guards and reaffirms their commitment to enhancing interoperability, maritime security, and regional stability.
During the ship’s week-long stay in Chennai, a series of joint engagements are planned. These include official courtesy calls, reciprocal visits aboard both nations’ ships, and interactive sessions and joint training drills — all aimed at improving mutual understanding and operational cooperation.
Officials noted that the visit offers both forces a valuable opportunity to exchange best practices and strengthen maritime ties, particularly in areas such as search and rescue, pollution control, anti-piracy operations, and disaster response — key areas of shared interest in the Indo-Pacific.
The collaboration is also seen as part of broader efforts to uphold a free, open, and rules-based maritime order in the region, amid increasing global focus on Indo-Pacific security.
