Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin praised music legend Ilaiyaraaja for his 50 years in music and urged the Central government to award him the country’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna.The state government organised a grand felicitation event in Chennai Saturday. It was attended by leading stars of Tamil cinema, including Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, producers, directors and actors.
At the function, Mr. Stalin announced that a new award will be given every year in Ilaiyaraaja’s name. He also requested the maestro to compose an album on Tamil Sangam literature.
“This is not just a felicitation but a thanksgiving by the government,” Stalin said. He added that Ilaiyaraaja’s songs are still on people’s lips and continue to inspire generations.
Ilaiyaraaja, in his reply, recalled that it was late Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi who gave him the title “Isaignani” (Music Scholar), which later became his identity.
The five-hour event began with a light music concert where his popular hits were performed by his orchestra. Later, Ilaiyaraaja himself presented his symphony for the first time in Chennai, calling it a proud moment.
Speakers including Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth shared their memories and praised Ilaiyaraaja’s unmatched contribution to cinema and music.
