A parliamentary standing committee has asked the government to develop strong legal and technological measures to act against those spreading AI-generated fake news. The committee, headed by MP Nishikant Dubey, said that while artificial intelligence can help in detecting misinformation, it is also being misused to create and circulate false content.
The panel suggested that the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, the Electronics and IT Ministry, and other departments should work together to frame clear rules. It recommended licensing norms for AI content creators, compulsory labelling of AI-generated material, stricter penalties, and more accountability. It also asked all media platforms to have internal fact-checking systems and an ombudsman to review misleading content.
At the same time, the committee stressed that regulations must respect freedom of expression and democratic values. It noted that AI alone cannot guarantee accurate fact-checking without human oversight. The panel described fake news as a serious threat to society and democracy and called for a balanced approach combining technology, law, and consultation with stakeholders.
