Stockholm, Oct 7: The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi for their groundbreaking research on peripheral immune tolerance.Their collective work identified regulatory T cells, which prevent the immune system from attacking the body’s own tissues, thereby reducing the risk of autoimmune diseases.
This discovery has paved the way for potential new treatments for conditions such as type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and certain cancers.
The laureates will receive 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately $1.2 million) and a gold medal, with the award ceremony scheduled for December 10 at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm.
