2,000 cusecs of water released from Vaigai dam for irrigation

The Vaigai Dam has released around 2,000 cusecs of water to support irrigation in the Sivaganga district, benefiting thousands of farmers across the region. This release, effective from November 2 to November 6, 2025, aims to help cultivate approximately 40,743 acres of traditional ayacut land. The water release corresponds to about 772 million cubic feet (mcft) over five days, following significant rainfall in the dam’s catchment areas brought by the recent northeast monsoon.
The Vaigai Dam has a maximum storage capacity of 71 feet and currently stands at a water level of 68.83 feet, with an inflow of 950 cusecs and an overall discharge of 3,499 cusecs reported at 8 PM on November 2.
Out of this discharge, 2,000 cusecs are being released through the river towards the Sivaganga district. Additionally, 1,280 cusecs of water is supplied via the Periyar Main Canal (PMC) and Theni Main Canal (TMC) for single crop irrigation needs.
Another 150 cusecs flows through the 58th canal, while 69 cusecs are allocated for drinking water purposes.Officials from the Water Resources Department indicated that the release is part of ongoing water management efforts to meet agricultural demands in the region, especially in the context of the monsoon season’s contribution to reservoir replenishment.
The availability of water from the dam is expected to provide relief and boost productivity for farmers dependent on this key irrigation source.
