Work is in progress to develop a vast eco-park over 118 acres at the Guindy Race Course Grounds near Guindy Railway Station. The project aims to turn the former racecourse into Chennaiās biggest green space, offering both recreational and environmental benefits.
The land, originally leased in 1945 for horse racing, was taken over by the Tamil Nadu government in September 2024 after the Chennai Race Club failed to clear rent dues of ā¹730.86 crore. Following advice from the National Green Tribunal and environmental groups, the government decided to convert the area into an eco-friendly public park.
As part of flood control measures, six water tanks have been constructed and expanded across 77,000 square metres, with a total capacity of over 13 million cubic litres. These tanks are expected to help recharge groundwater and prevent flooding in South Chennai neighbourhoods.
The new eco-park will include 2.5 kilometres of tree-lined walking paths, viewing pavilions, and a plant nursery run by the Horticulture Department. The nursery will offer more than 100 varieties of plants, priced between ā¹15 and ā¹1,500.
Once completed, the Guindy Eco-Park will serve as Chennaiās largest urban green zone, promoting eco-awareness while providing a peaceful retreat for city residents.
