The Election Commission of India (ECI) has reported significant progress in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process across 12 states, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and West Bengal.
The SIR initiative aims to meticulously update the electoral rolls to ensure accurate and comprehensive voter lists ahead of upcoming elections.
In Tamil Nadu, approximately 78.09% of SIR forms have been successfully distributed to eligible voters. With an electorate of around 6.41 crore registered voters in the state, this translates to over 5 crore SIR forms handed out, marking a key milestone in the voter verification and updation process.
The SIR process includes enabling voters to verify their names, report discrepancies, apply for new voter registrations, and ensure all updates are reflected timely in the updated electoral rolls. This is part of the Election Commission’s effort to improve transparency and enhance voter participation.
There had been legal challenges during the SIR exercise, notably from various political parties including the DMK, citing concerns about conducting SIR activities during the monsoon and harvest seasons. However, the Supreme Court of India allowed the SIR process to continue in Tamil Nadu, accommodating procedural timelines.
