The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has adjourned the hearing related to the Thiruparankundram Hill issue to December 9.
The matter came up for hearing on Thursday, where the court sought clarifications from the government and police authorities regarding the implementation of its earlier order.
The case pertains to the lighting of the traditional Deepam (sacred lamp) at the Deepa Thoon (stone lamp pillar) located on the hilltop of Thiruparankundram. Earlier, the court had directed the authorities to permit the lighting of the lamp as per long-standing religious practice. However, the order was not implemented, citing law and order concerns. Police officials reportedly denied permission for devotees to go uphill, which led to fresh petitions and wide public attention.
During the latest hearing, the judge questioned officials on why the original order had not been followed. The government submitted that it had filed an appeal against the previous direction and also sought a stay. Considering this, the court decided to postpone the case to December 9 and instructed the authorities concerned to file detailed reports.
Thiruparankundram is an important religious site, housing one of the six sacred abodes of Lord Murugan. The hill is also home to another place of worship, which has made the issue sensitive and complex. The situation continues to draw attention from devotees, activists, and political groups.
Further directions are expected when the case comes up for hearing on December 9.
