Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated the double‑decker bus service in Chennai today, marking the return of the iconic two‑level buses after an 18‑year pause.
The service, aimed at boosting tourism and public transport appeal, has generated excitement among residents of all ages.
Once a familiar sight on city roads from the 1970s until 2007, the double‑decker buses are being reintroduced in collaboration with the Chennai Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) and state tourism officials. As part of the initiative, the tourism department has procured 20 buses from Ashok Leyland, including an electric, air‑conditioned double‑decker backed by contributions from the Tamil diaspora in the United States. The buses are decorated with iconic Tamil imagery and slogans celebrating the state’s culture.
During the launch, Stalin rode the bus and was briefed on its features by officials. The government plans to operate the service on key routes stretching from Adyar to Mamallapuram, designed to offer both commuters and tourists an engaging travel experience. State officials say this move will also help increase tourist footfall and showcase Chennai’s heritage landmarks in a new light.
