In preparation for India’s 77th Republic Day celebrations on January 26, the Tamil Nadu government has intensified security measures across the state, deploying over one lakh police personnel to ensure peaceful and incident-free events.
The extensive security deployment covers major public venues, transport hubs, crowded localities, and coastal areas, with senior police officials ordering heightened vigilance. Police personnel have been instructed to remain on high alert, focusing on preventive policing and swift response to any untoward incidents.
In Chennai, around 16,000 police personnel have been deployed under the supervision of the City Police Commissioner. Security arrangements are concentrated around key locations such as Marina Beach and Kamarajar Salai, where the main flag-hoisting ceremony, parade, and related civic and cultural programmes will take place. Police teams are handling crowd control, traffic regulation, and intensive patrolling in high-footfall zones.
As part of enhanced security measures, the Chennai City Police have declared the Marina Beach area a “Red Zone” ahead of the Republic Day function, which will be held near the Labour Statue. Key stretches along Marina Beach, major approach roads, and important routes across the city have also been brought under Red Zone security, with multi-layered police deployment.
To prevent any security threats, authorities have imposed a ban on the operation of drones, microlight aircraft, paragliders, paramotors, hand gliders, and hot air balloons within Chennai city limits on January 25 and 26.
Traffic restrictions will be enforced on Kamarajar Salai, from the Gandhi Statue to the War Memorial, starting 6 AM on Republic Day until the conclusion of the event. Motorists have been advised to follow the traffic diversions announced by the Chennai Traffic Police and cooperate with security personnel.
Officials have urged the public to adhere to security guidelines and extend full cooperation to ensure the smooth and dignified conduct of the Republic Day celebrations across Tamil Nadu.
