Skating classes are fast becoming a favourite after-school activity among children in Chennai, with parks, playgrounds and private academies witnessing a steady rise in enrolments. From neighbourhood skating rinks to professional coaching centres, parents are increasingly encouraging children to take up skating for both fitness and discipline.Coaches say the sport has seen a surge in interest post-pandemic, as families look for outdoor activities that combine fun with physical well-being. âSkating improves balance, coordination and stamina. It is one of the best full-body workouts for children,â said R. Karthikeyan, a skating coach from Anna Nagar. âWe now train children as young as four, and many of them pick it up very quickly.â
Health experts point out that regular skating helps strengthen leg muscles, improves cardiovascular health and boosts reflexes. It is also known to enhance focus and self-confidence. âUnlike screen-based activities, skating keeps children active and mentally alert. It also helps in managing weight and posture issues,â noted Dr. S. Meenakshi, a Chennai-based paediatrician.
Parents echo similar views. âMy son spends less time on the phone now and looks forward to his skating class every evening,â said Lakshmi Narayanan, a parent from Velachery. âI can see a clear improvement in his fitness and confidence.â
Children, too, are enthusiastic about the sport. âI like skating because it makes me feel fast and free,â said 8-year-old Arjun, who trains at a park in T. Nagar. âI want to take part in competitions one day.â
With Chennaiâs growing awareness about fitness and outdoor sports, skating is emerging not just as a hobby but as a healthy lifestyle choice for the cityâs young generation.
