Washington, Feb 2: The Trump administration has approved major arms sales to Israel and Saudi Arabia, worth USD 6.67 billion and USD 9 billion, respectively, amid rising tensions in the Middle East over possible US action against Iran. The State Department announced the approvals late Friday, after notifying Congress earlier.
The sales coincide with President Donald Trump’s Gaza ceasefire plan, aimed at ending the Israel-Hamas conflict and supporting reconstruction after two years of war that devastated the territory and killed tens of thousands.
Saudi Arabia’s USD 9 billion package includes 730 Patriot missiles and related equipment.
The State Department said the sale strengthens a major non-NATO ally, enhances regional air and missile defense, and protects Saudi, US, and allied forces, while contributing to Gulf stability and economic progress.
Israel’s USD 6.67 billion package is divided into four deals. The largest, valued at USD 3.8 billion, provides 30 Apache attack helicopters with rocket launchers and advanced targeting systems.
Another USD 1.98 billion will fund 3,250 light tactical vehicles to move personnel and logistics for the Israel Defense Forces.
Additional components include USD 740 million for power packs for existing armored personnel carriers and USD 150 million for light utility helicopters.
The State Department said the sales would not alter the regional military balance and emphasized that supporting Israel’s defense capabilities is vital to US national security and its long-term commitment to the country’s safety.
