The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has proposed a Digital Twin pilot project covering nearly 5 sq km in the city’s core areas, including Nungambakkam, College Road, Greams Road and Anna Salai. The project aims to promote data-driven urban planning and improve overall city management.
Under the initiative, a virtual replica of the selected zones will be created. The Digital Twin platform will be supported by an Urban Data Observatory and an infrastructure asset management system, both of which are yet to be rolled out. The system will integrate inputs from the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), various city sensors and GIS mapping, and will use 3D and 4D simulations along with artificial intelligence tools for planning and analysis.
To enhance flood monitoring capabilities, the Corporation plans to install surveillance cameras at 100 stormwater drain locations across the city at an estimated cost of ₹2 crore.
Additionally, the GCC’s GIS Cell will undertake a LiDAR survey spanning around 1,000 km of bus route roads and key interior roads, at a projected cost of ₹5 crore. The survey is expected to generate high-resolution road data, prepare detailed digital maps and assist in traffic management and maintenance planning. As part of the pilot phase, initial LiDAR mapping will be carried out on Khader Nawaz Khan Road.
Officials said the integrated digital systems would enable civic departments to better assess flood risks, traffic congestion and emergency scenarios, ensuring improved coordination and quicker response through consolidated real-time data.
