Kathmandu, Feb 27: Nepali Congress (NC) president Gagan Kumar Thapa on Thursday hailed the next five years (2026–2031) as a potential “golden period of change” for Nepal, urging citizens to support his party in the upcoming House of Representatives elections on March 5.
Speaking at a rally in Surkhet, Thapa emphasized that the NC aims to generate jobs within Nepal, ensure affordable healthcare, and fulfill the people’s aspirations.
He criticized previous governments for frequent leadership changes that stalled development and reform.
Thapa also recalled the Gen Z protests on September 8–9, 2025, which left at least 77 people dead and led to the resignation of K P Sharma Oli’s coalition government, stressing the importance of remembering these events while shaping the country’s future.
Meanwhile, former Prime Minister and Nepali Communist Party (NCP) leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ framed the elections as a contest between extremist forces and a progressive nationalist approach, asserting that NCP represents the nationalist alternative.
He dismissed rumors about electoral alliances and predicted that the NCP would emerge as the largest party.
Both leaders highlighted the importance of ensuring stability, addressing past mistakes, and responding to the aspirations of Nepali citizens.
