The Tamil Nadu government has announced that the first phase of the population census will begin across the state on July 17. The exercise is part of the nationwide census process that was earlier scheduled for 2021 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The upcoming census is expected to play a crucial role in updating demographic and socio-economic data across the country.
According to official information, the first phase of the census in Tamil Nadu will continue for 45 days, from July 17 to August 30. During this stage, officials will focus on house listing and collecting details about residential conditions, facilities and household assets. Enumerators will gather responses to around 33 questions covering aspects such as housing status, amenities and basic infrastructure available to families.
The census process will be conducted entirely through digital methods, marking a shift from earlier manual systems. Across the country, around 3.2 million government officials are expected to participate in the large-scale exercise. The second phase of the census, which will involve the detailed population count, is expected to be conducted next year after the completion of the initial house-listing stage.
