Vijay, founder and president of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has strongly criticised the Tamil Nadu government over women’s safety, stating that a government that fails to ensure protection for girls cannot continue to remain in power.
In a statement, Vijay expressed concern over a series of recent incidents involving crimes against women and girls in the state. He said that such incidents occurring within a short period have shaken the confidence of the public in the law-and-order system.
“There is no safety for the public, for women, for children, for the elderly or for youth,” he said, adding that people have begun questioning whether a government that cannot guarantee basic safety should remain in office.
Earlier, AIADMK General Secretary and former Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Thursday criticised the DMK government over the alleged sexual assault and murder of a schoolgirl in Thoothukudi.
In a statement, Palaniswami said the incident involving a girl from Vedanatham village has shocked the state and highlighted serious concerns about law and order under Chief Minister M. K. Stalin. He alleged that crimes against women are rising in Tamil Nadu and blamed the government for failing to ensure the safety of women and girls.
The AIADMK leader also criticised the police response, claiming the authorities were negligent when the girl’s parents reported her missing and even cast suspicion on the victim.
He noted that the victim’s family has been protesting for swift justice and questioned why the perpetrators have not yet been identified or arrested, raising concerns over the administration’s accountability.
