Tiruchy, Mar 17: Senior Congress leader Su Thirunavukkarasar on Monday expressed confidence that the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA), which includes the Congress, would secure a sweeping victory in the upcoming Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu.
Addressing reporters in Tiruchy, he said the alliance enjoys strong public support across the State and is well-positioned to register a massive win at the hustings.
In a significant personal decision, Thirunavukkarasar announced that he would not be contesting in this election. Instead, he indicated his preference to field his son, Ramachandran, from the Aranthangi Assembly constituency, describing it as his “favourite” seat. He added that having had a long political career and served multiple times as a minister, he was content stepping aside.
Commenting on actor-turned-politician Vijay and his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), Thirunavukkarasar said there remains uncertainty over whether the outfit would align with any major alliance. He noted that the time had come for Vijay to take a clear political stand.
Responding to allegations from the opposition regarding crimes against women in Tamil Nadu, Thirunavukkarasar said such incidents occur across all states. However, he maintained that the Tamil Nadu police respond swiftly and ensure timely action, asserting that the State’s crime rate remains lower compared to many others.
