Puducherry, Apr 9:
In view of the Assembly elections, Puducherry District Election Officer and Collector Kulothungan on Wednesday announced that Tamil Nadu government-run TASMAC liquor shops located within a 5 km radius of the Union Territory will remain closed for three days.
The Puducherry administration has already declared a dry day for three days as part of election measures.
Speaking to reporters, the official said extensive arrangements have been made to ensure free and fair polling for the 30-member Assembly.
A total of 78 flying squads, 40 stationary squads, and 50 video monitoring teams have been deployed for election duty.
Checkposts have been established at 35 locations along the borders with neighbouring states.
Additionally, 36 more flying squads and 30 two-wheeler flying squads have been pressed into service for last-minute surveillance.
Vulnerable polling stations have been identified, and necessary precautions have been taken. Around 3,000 security personnel, including Puducherry Police, CRPF, and a special team from Karnataka Police, have been deployed.
Officials also reported significant seizures since the Model Code of Conduct came into force. Cash amounting to ₹69.99 lakh, liquor worth ₹61.38 lakh, gold and silver valued at ₹6.71 crore, and drugs worth ₹20 lakh have been confiscated.
As many as 38 FIRs have been registered for violations of the Model Code of Conduct. Authorities have also sealed 443 bars, 83 arrack shops, and 27 godowns.
Disciplinary action has been taken against government staff, with six employees suspended for canvassing for political parties, while five more have been recommended for suspension.
Kulothungan added that 38 cases, including seven related to cash distribution to voters and other MCC violations, have been registered as part of strict enforcement measures.
