Chennai, April 29:

The much-awaited post-election surveys, popularly known as exit polls, for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections are set to be released this evening, offering the first broad indication of the state’s electoral verdict.

The release of exit polls was withheld until now in accordance with Election Commission regulations, which prohibit publication of such surveys until voting across all phases is completed. With polling now concluded, media organisations and survey agencies are expected to begin broadcasting their projections after 6.30 pm today.

The exit polls are likely to provide estimates on seat share and vote percentage for the key contenders in the fray, including the DMK-led alliance, the AIADMK-led front, and the newly emerging political force led by actor Vijay. The 2026 election has been widely viewed as a closely contested and multi-cornered battle, making the projections particularly significant.

Pre-poll surveys had indicated a tight race, with some giving a marginal edge to the ruling dispensation while others pointed to a surge by the opposition. The entry of new players has further added uncertainty, with analysts suggesting that even small vote shifts could have a decisive impact on the final outcome.

Tamil Nadu witnessed a high voter turnout in this election, reflecting strong public participation and heightened political engagement. Observers believe this could translate into unpredictable results, making exit polls a crucial, though not definitive, indicator of the people’s mandate.

However, experts caution that exit polls are based on sample surveys and may not always accurately predict the final outcome. The official results, which alone determine the formation of the next government, will be declared on May 4.

As political parties and the public await the projections, all eyes will be on this evening’s exit poll numbers, which are expected to set the tone for the final phase of the electoral process in the state.
