Chennai, May 25:
With commercial activity booming across the city, Chennai’s key shopping zones are witnessing a sharp rise in demand for dedicated parking spaces, leaving motorists frustrated and raising concerns over urban planning gaps. From T. Nagar to Velachery and Anna Nagar, visitors to busy retail districts are increasingly struggling to find safe and accessible parking, often resulting in traffic congestion spilling onto already crowded roads.
Popular areas such as T. Nagar, Anna Nagar and Velachery—home to malls, branded stores, and street shopping clusters—are bearing the brunt of the parking crunch. Narrow internal roads, increasing vehicle ownership, and limited multi-level parking infrastructure have compounded the issue, especially during weekends and festive seasons.
“Finding parking in T. Nagar is a nightmare. I end up circling the same streets for 20 minutes before I get a spot, and sometimes I just leave without shopping,” said Ramesh Kumar, a frequent visitor to the area.
Retailers say the situation is beginning to impact business. “Customers often complain about parking before they even step into the store. Some prefer online shopping just to avoid the hassle,” noted Priya Menon, who runs a boutique in Anna Nagar. Traders argue that better parking facilities could directly improve footfall and sales.
Traffic police officials acknowledge the problem but say enforcement alone cannot solve it. “We regulate roadside parking and manage congestion, but the real need is for planned parking infrastructure such as multi-level facilities in commercial hotspots,” a senior official from the Greater Chennai Traffic Police said.
Urban planners echo similar concerns, pointing out that Chennai’s rapid commercial expansion has not been matched by infrastructure upgrades. “Every new commercial complex should mandatorily include adequate parking. Retrofitting solutions in older areas is challenging but necessary,” said an urban development expert.
Officials from the Greater Chennai Corporation say proposals for additional parking facilities, including smart parking systems and multi-level structures, are under consideration. However, implementation timelines remain uncertain.
As Chennai continues to grow as a retail and lifestyle hub, the demand for parking is only expected to rise. Without timely intervention, the city’s bustling shopping districts may find themselves gridlocked—not just by traffic, but by the lack of space to accommodate it.
