Chennai, May 26:
Left parties and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) have urged the Tamil Nadu government to immediately convene an all-party meeting to decide the next course of action following the Supreme Court’s dismissal of the State’s review petition related to the proposed Mekedatu dam project in Karnataka.
VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan said the issue is not merely legal but deeply tied to the sentiments and livelihood of people across the State. He insisted that all political stakeholders represented in the Assembly must be consulted before finalising any response strategy. He further stated that the government’s position should be shaped through collective discussion rather than unilateral decision-making.
Communist Party of India (Marxist) state secretary P Shanmugam described the court’s decision as adverse to Tamil Nadu’s interests and argued that it runs contrary to earlier final judgments on the Cauvery dispute. He called upon the State government to consider filing a curative petition in the Supreme Court, stressing the need to safeguard agricultural livelihoods and water rights in the delta region.
Similarly, Communist Party of India state secretary M Veerapandian warned that Tamil Nadu faces the risk of losing its rightful share of Cauvery waters if timely action is not taken. He reiterated the demand for an all-party meeting to deliberate on both legal and political strategies to counter any move towards implementing the Mekedatu project.
