Chennai, May 27:

A fresh political controversy has erupted within the Congress in Tamil Nadu after Youth Congress national secretary V Shrinithi Venkatesa Mohan publicly alleged that party functionaries were being advised to refrain from criticising the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in exchange for political appointments. Her claims, shared along with a screenshot of an alleged message from a senior party functionary, have sparked intense debate over ideological integrity and internal dynamics within the party.

According to Shrinithi, the message urged her to avoid raising ideological objections against the ruling party and instead maintain silence to improve her chances of securing a government-appointed board chairperson post. The revelation has stirred unease within Congress ranks, with many questioning whether political expediency is being prioritised over core party principles.

The issue gained further traction amid the ongoing political churn in the state, particularly following the resignation of four AIADMK MLAs who subsequently joined the ruling TVK. The development has already drawn criticism from various quarters, including Congress MP S Jothimani, adding to the broader discourse on shifting loyalties and alliance politics in Tamil Nadu.

Defending her stance, Shrinithi asserted that her political journey has not been driven by a quest for power or positions. She remarked that if personal gain had been her objective, she could have aligned with the ruling side as early as 2021. Her statement appeared to underline her commitment to ideological consistency, even at the cost of political advancement.

She also questioned the backlash against her remarks, asking whether it was wrong to oppose elected representatives aligning with parties whose ideologies conflict with that of the Congress. Her comments have resonated with a section of party workers who see her stand as a call to uphold political values, while others view it as a reflection of growing internal dissent.

The episode has now opened up a larger conversation within Congress circles about the balance between political pragmatism and ideological clarity, especially in the context of alliances and shifting power equations in Tamil Nadu.
