A major political controversy erupted in West Bengal after police conducted an extensive search operation at the Kolkata residence of Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee.
The search, which lasted for more than four hours, was reportedly carried out as part of an ongoing investigation linked to Banerjee’s executive assistant, Sumit Roy. The operation drew significant attention as it took place amid heightened political tensions in the state.
Officials from the Salboni Police Station in West Midnapore district arrived at Banerjee’s residence early in the morning and carried out a detailed inspection of the premises.
Reports indicate that law enforcement personnel were searching for evidence connected to a case involving alleged irregularities and related investigations.
The development comes just days after the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) questioned Banerjee for over five hours regarding alleged discrepancies in documents submitted during the process of selecting the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.
Investigators are examining claims that signatures of several legislators may have been forged.
Leaders of the Trinamool Congress criticized the search operation, alleging that investigative agencies were being used to target opposition leaders.
The party described the move as politically motivated and accused rival parties of attempting to tarnish Banerjee’s image ahead of crucial political developments in the state.
With the Enforcement Directorate scheduled to question Banerjee in the coming days, the incident is expected to further intensify the political battle between the ruling Trinamool Congress and its opponents.
The investigation continues, and authorities have not yet disclosed the outcome of the search.
