News Delhi, June 19:
The Delhi High Court has upheld the temporary ban on the messaging platform Telegram, stating that the reasons provided by authorities were sufficient under the law.
The court observed that the restriction was imposed in the interest of public order and security, and found no immediate grounds to interfere with the government’s decision. It emphasised that such interim measures are permissible when there is credible concern over misuse of digital platforms.
The case stemmed from allegations that Telegram was being used for illegal activities, including the circulation of sensitive content and unlawful communications. Authorities argued that temporary restrictions were necessary to curb misuse and maintain law and order.
During the hearing, the court noted that the ban was not permanent and that authorities must periodically review the situation. It also underlined the need to balance freedom of expression with national security concerns.
The ruling comes amid increasing scrutiny of encrypted messaging platforms, with courts and governments examining how such services are regulated while ensuring user rights are protected.
Further hearings in the matter are expected as the situation evolves and authorities reassess the necessity of continuing the restriction.
