Residents of Chennai have a refreshed green space to enjoy as the renovated Bougainvillea Park in Anna Nagar was officially reopened on Monday following a major upgrade costing ₹2.95 crore.
The park was inaugurated by Revenue Minister K. A. Sengottaiyan, marking the completion of redevelopment works carried out by the Greater Chennai Corporation.
Spread across 12,800 square metres, the park now features over 1,350 trees and plants spanning more than 30 species, reinforcing its role as an important urban green lung.
As part of the revamp, several modern amenities have been introduced, including a 17,000 sq. ft. walking track, decorative lighting, an outdoor fitness zone, a meditation centre, and a children’s play area equipped with more than 10 play structures. Visitors can also make use of ample seating arrangements, pergolas, accessible restrooms, a fountain, and an automated irrigation system with 120 sprinklers.
Following the inauguration, the minister planted a sapling and reviewed the upgraded facilities, directing officials to ensure consistent maintenance. Authorities estimate that the park could attract around 500 visitors everyday.
Meanwhile, G. S. Sameeran, Commissioner of the Greater Chennai Corporation, inspected ongoing canal improvement works in the Perungudi and Sholinganallur zones. The project is being executed at an estimated cost of ₹27.58 crore.
