Chennai, July 8:
All India Institute of Medical Sciences Madurai is nearing a major milestone, with construction of its permanent campus reported to be about 90% complete. Key infrastructure, including classrooms, laboratories, and student hostels, is in the final stages, raising expectations that academic activities will soon shift fully to the new premises.
The sprawling campus is coming up on a 220-acre site at Ko. Pudupatti near Thoppur in Madurai, with an estimated project cost of ₹2,021.51 crore. The project, which began on May 22, 2024, is being developed with financial assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency and is scheduled for full completion by February 2027.
The construction is being carried out in two phases. The first phase includes the medical college, laboratories, hostels, residential quarters, outpatient department (OPD), sports facilities, and a 750-seat auditorium. The second phase will focus on the main hospital building for inpatient services. In total, 24 structures are being built as part of the campus, with thousands of workers engaged in round-the-clock efforts to meet deadlines.
Designed to international standards, the campus incorporates modern healthcare infrastructure and sustainable construction practices. Once fully operational, the 900-bed hospital will feature a dedicated 150-bed infectious diseases unit, enhancing specialised care capacity in the region.
At present, AIIMS Madurai is functioning temporarily from the Government Medical College campus in Ramanathapuram. Recently, fourth-year MBBS students were accommodated in newly completed hostels at the Thoppur site while continuing their clinical training at Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai.
With the medical college and hostel facilities nearing readiness, regular classes at the permanent campus are expected to commence by the end of August or early September. Officials have also indicated that the campus may be officially inaugurated next month, marking a significant step in strengthening Tamil Nadu’s medical education and healthcare infrastructure.
