New Delhi, July 24:
Activist Sonam Wangchuk ended his 26-day hunger strike at a private hospital in Gurugram, following discussions with the Centre over student protests alleging irregularities in competitive examinations.
Wangchuk, who had been on an indefinite fast, broke it in the presence of Union ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh at Medanta Hospital, where he had been admitted for medical monitoring after his health deteriorated.
Visuals from the hospital showed the activist being assisted to sit up, with ministers offering him his first sip of liquid to formally end the fast. His wife, Gitanjali Angmo, was present during the moment.
“I’m grateful and happy to break my fast. Thank you,” Wangchuk said, expressing emotional gratitude and acknowledging his wife’s support during the prolonged protest.
The hunger strike, which lasted nearly four weeks, was launched in solidarity with students protesting alleged exam irregularities and demanding greater transparency and accountability in the conduct of competitive tests.
