Chennai, Aug 19:
The Tamil Nadu Police on Wednesday informed the Madras High Court that permission would be granted on Thursday for a statewide two-wheeler rally organised to demand the scrapping of the NEET examination.
Dravidar Kazhagam vice-president Kali Poongundran had moved the Madras High Court challenging the police order denying permission for the rally. The organisation plans to conduct a two-wheeler campaign across Tamil Nadu demanding the abolition of NEET and opposing reservation for economically weaker sections.
During the earlier hearing, the court had directed the petitioner to furnish details including the number of two-wheelers and participants expected to take part in the rally, as well as the starting and ending points.
Accordingly, details of the proposed rally, including the starting points at Chennai, Tiruvannamalai, Arani, Tirupattur and Tindivanam, among other places, were submitted before the court on Tuesday.
When the matter came up for hearing before Justice V Lakshminarayanan on Wednesday, Advocate General’s Criminal Side John Sathyan, appearing for the police, informed the court that permission for the two-wheeler rally would be granted on Thursday.
The judge then asked whether permission had been granted for the proposed conference in Tirunelveli. The police informed the court that permission for the conference had already been granted on Tuesday.
Following the submissions, the judge adjourned the hearing to Thursday.
