Chennai, Aug 21:
The Greater Chennai Corporation has vaccinated 22,158 street dogs against rabies in just eight days as part of a special citywide campaign aimed at preventing the spread of rabies and improving public safety.
The vaccination drive began on August 11 in the Tiruvottiyur, Manali and Tondiarpet zones. Along with anti-rabies vaccination, the dogs are also being administered medicines to control internal and external parasites.
The campaign is being conducted simultaneously in all three zones, with 10 teams deployed in each zone.
After completing the first phase in these areas, the Corporation plans to extend the vaccination programme to other parts of the city.
The civic body has set an ambitious target of vaccinating around 2 lakh street dogs within 75 working days.
The initiative is aimed at reducing the risk of rabies among residents and helping Chennai move towards becoming a rabies-free city.
The large-scale vaccination campaign is part of the Corporation’s efforts to strengthen animal health measures while improving public safety across the city.
