Chennai, Oct 8:
Greater Chennai Corporation Mayor R Priya reviewed the city’s preparedness for the northeast monsoon and directed officials to complete pending works and ensure that emergency arrangements are in place.
The review meeting was attended by Deputy Mayor M Mahesh Kumar, Corporation Commissioner G S Sameeran and senior officials. The meeting focused on stormwater drain works, desilting of river outfalls and road restoration works that need to be completed before the onset of the monsoon.
The Corporation has identified 215 relief centres and 116 community kitchens across the city. Officials have been instructed to inspect the basic facilities available at the relief centres and ensure adequate stocks of food at the community kitchens.
Officials were also directed to keep pumps ready in areas prone to waterlogging. Emergency machinery, including tree-cutting equipment and vehicles, should be inspected and kept in working condition to enable quick deployment during emergencies.
The civic body is also monitoring pending stormwater drain and road works as part of its preparations to minimise the impact of heavy rain and flooding in the city.
