Chennai: Pachaiyappa’s College, Chennai, remembered a doyen of its Botany Department, Prof V S Sundaralingam, on his birth centenary by inaugurating a hall (smart room) named after him, recently on the college premises.
Organised by the Pachaiyappa Plant Science Forum PG and Research Department of Botany, the naming of the hall was a tribute to the ‘Bhishmar’ of the college’s Botany Department, says a note from the principal.
Born on 28 September 1918 in Thiruchengode, Prof VSS (as he was known in academic circles) was instrumental in the elevation of the department into a PG and Research Department that now serves students and teachers from the city and other districts also.
Prof VSS passed away in 2011, leaving behind hundreds of sorrowing students.
The Prof V S Sundaralingam Hall was inaugurated by A Balasubramanian, former HoD of the Botany Department in Pachaiyappa’s College and former principal of CKN College. Principal N Shettu, gave the presidential address. Pachaiyappa’s Trust secretary A Subramanian, former Prof of Botany S Bharathan, former Prof of CAS in Botany, Madras University, R Balasubramanian, former V-C of Vels University, N Anand, son of Sundaralingam, advocate S Sadasivan, Pachaiyappa’s Botany Department HoD V M Akila and deputy HoD J Kamaleswari participated.
