Chennai: We are sure that the cup board in most houses are already smiling by holding all the new collection of clothes that has been purchased for Deepavali.

‘News Today‘ brings out the latest products available in the market, be it clothing, accessories, gift items, sweets or crackers.

WHAT’S THE COLOUR OF SEASON?

John Kennedy, a fashion designer in the city, says, “Lehangas are never off season. This time, we must say, bright coloured Lehangas have moved out well. Young women, who love being dressed up, keep this as the first in the list. The next are the long kurtis paired up with palazzos. It can be said Yellow is the colour of season and Orange too are picked widely, this festival. As of me, the A-line kurtis are best to be paired with palazzo. Likewise, umbrella skirts are back with a bang, that can be experimented with collared short kurtis or the plain skirts with grand long top.”

GLORY OF SAREE

Whether it’ s getting into the mood of the moment or letting people capture the essence of a beautifully-draped saree, this Deepavali there are varied new collection of sarees. Founder of Palam Silks, Jayashree says, “Copper glow, a pure Kanchipuram silk saree with copper zari, Pochampattu which is also a silk saree with Pochampalli border, Too Jute that comes out with jute bhuttas and jute border and Kanchipuram silk dupattas in pure zari are the top collections that are picked up by people this year.”

She further says, “Copper glow is the first ever experiment with copper zari in Kanchipuram. These sarees range between Rs 10,000 to Rs 30,000 in which the zari is pure silver and is copper plated. Also, Too Jute with jute bhuttas and border is an experiment where we have fused the jute silk threads. The silk duppata will almost depict an actual saree.”

Accessories play an important role during festival times. Explaining the new varieties that have raised their heads this time, John Kennedy says, “Hanging earrings are a setback this season. But the button ones move well. Floral jewelleries are evergreen and they never go off-beat. Giant floral based neck pieces are doing well with the deep V-necked kurtis and saris too.”

GIFTS GEAR UP

Along with sharing love and happiness, exchanging gifts is one of the prominent traditions practiced by us. “Lot of people opt for lanterns this time. Also the corporate gifts is a new culture. Many small gifts move out as part of gifting your corporate colleagues. A variety of small Buddha statue that is considered as a hamper of luck tops the list among them,” says a gift shop owner in city.

GOOD FOOD GOOD LIFE

People are not only exploring with the clothes or accessories but also food. “Chennaiites who have turned too health conscious, choose health over taste. This time most of them have ditched the white sugar and have opted for palm/brown sugar. Many foodies or those who would love trying new dishes have revived the traditional sweets like Akkaravadisal and Okkarai. Both are done with Karuppati and are very tasty and healthy,” says Shri Bala, a celebrity chef.
