In a series of positive developments, the Pallavaram Municipal Commissioner last week, started to take steps to address a host of issues in the neighbourhood, and agreed to act on a 16-point agenda, put forward by the Federation of Civic and Welfare Associations of Pallavaram.
That’s not all, as during the same week, the Madras High Court has ordered immediate re-location of the TASMAC inside Pallavaram bus stand.
Speaking to News Today, federation president V Santhanam, said, “After many days of trying, we were able to get the appointment of Pallavaram Municipal Commissioner on 5 February. When we put forward a 16-point issue list, the Commissioner patiently heard our demands, grievances and assured immediate solutions for a host of problems by instructing the officials concerned.”
Regarding water supply problems, he assured that residents will benefit from Chembarambakkam Water Scheme in two months. With regard to garbage collection issues, he assured that the Municipality will recruit more workers soon for war-footing collection.
“In another important measure, the Commissioner asked the Sanitory Officer to initiate the desilting of the concerned SWDs. Regarding property tax, he said, if any of the house owners feel s/he has been taxed irrationally, an appeal can be made for the Municipality to reconsider,” he added.
Secondly, the court order to re-locate the liquor outlet inside Pallavaram bus stand, has brought relief to many. Sources said, a division bench ordered that liquor shops were not supposed to be located inside bus stands, on the sole ground of possible public nuisance.
The interim ruling was passed on a PIL petition filed by S P Gandhi (52), a resident of Pallavaram, seeking a direction to Kancheepuram Collector and TASMAC District Manager to close down a liquor shop in the premises of the said bus stand and to restrain them from opening another outlet on the way to the Pallavaram Railway Station.
