Darkness sets in, clock ticks fast, we hit the bed (or at least, we pretend to) and pull out the mobile phone to text non-stop / complete binge-watching a series or in the case of middle-aged folks, it is YouTube videos before the sun creeps in.
Yes, admit it. Every one of us have been there – faking a sleep to be on the bright light-emitting mobile phone for the rest of the night. Doing so certainly comes with a cost and in one such instance is a 25-year-old woman who was recently reported with bloodshot eyes after using the cell phone with maximum brightness for two continuous years.
However, that is not all. It has affected her vision in right eye and the doctors have stated that there has been more than 500 holes on her cornea. Following which, she was given steroid treatment that is reported to have shown improvement after three days. It has been said that the blue light, scientifically known as high energy visible (HEV) light that is emitted from the device affects the retina.
Time and again, we have been advised not to use gadgets in the dark, but little do we assess the repercussion and end up sneaking the device in our bed sheet. Experts in the city state that it can lead to permanent vision loss even if used occasionally as it dries the eyes and leads to straining.
Using mobile phones with naked eyes for even 30 minutes can cause macular degeneration that is caused by regression of light-sensitive cells which could give rise to wide range of problems. Studies show that the activity can generate toxic molecules in photoreceptors which accelerates several disorders.
Yet another inevitable habit is working on computers for a long time without taking a break. Though we have not been given a choice, ophthalmologists still suggest the simple ’20-20-20′ rule, which is every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
