Chennai: There seems to be no stopping for the spread of coronavirus in Tamilnadu. The State has become the third worst coronavirus-hit state in the country, surpassing Delhi after reporting over 7,200 cases.
While Maharashtra tops the list with over 20,200 cases and at least 779 deaths, it is followed by Gujarat with around 7,800 cases. Delhi, with nearly 7,000 cases, has slipped to the fourth spot.
The surge in total number of corona cases in Tamilnadu breached the 7,000 mark on Sunday, with 669 more testing positive, including a single day high of 509 in Chennai, even as the toll rose to 47 with the death of three more people infected by COVID.
A bullet in issued by the Health and Family Welfare department said most numbers of cases were linked to Chennai’s Koyambedu wholesale market, with 669 reported from 19 districts, as the total cases surged to 7,204.
In fact more than 3,000 positive cases were reported in the last six days alone–due to increased testing–when compared to 4,058 cases on 5 May.
A 74-year-old man from Chengalpattu, admitted on 8 May died the same day at Chengalpattu MCH at 1220 hrs and tested positive Sunday, while a 59-year-old man, twith Type-2 diabetes and coronary artery disease from Chennai, admitted on 7 May at Stanley MCH died Sunday at 2.30 am.
The other death was reported at Kilpauk MCH when a 55-year-old man with chronic kidney disease, Type-2 diabetes and Systemic Hypertension from Tiruvallur, admitted on 4 May, died yesterday at at 1.20 am and tested positive today, taking the number of COVID-related deaths to 47 so far.
Of the total 47 deaths, 28 were reported in Chennai, four in Chengalpattu, two each in Tiruvallur, Madurai and Villuppuram and one each in Coimbatore, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Erode, Kanchipuram, Theni, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli and Vellore.
