Chennai: After two months, flight services resumed in Tamilnadu and other parts of the country today. From Chennai airport, the first flight post Covid-19 was an Indigo aircraft, which took passengers to Delhi.
Domestic flight services to and from Chennai and other airports resumed from today with stringent norms, after they were grounded for the last two months in view of the lockdown to combat the spread of corona virus pandemic.
After a meeting with higher government officials, health department and Airport Authority of India at the State Secretariat Sunday, the government gave the nod to resume both the services–arrival and departure–from the airport here from today by strictly following the Standard Operation Procedure (SOP).
Initially, when the Centre announced resumption of domestic air services from tomorrow, Tamilnadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami urged the Union government not to resume it in Chennai (where the corona cases has been on the rise) till 31 May, when the lockdown was scheduled to be lifted.
Earlier, reports said that only departures were likely to resume at the Chennai airport from tomorrow while arrival operations could be postponed at least till the end of the month.
However, after Sunday’s meeting held to discuss about the flight operations during which testing and quarantine procedures were prescribed, it was decided to resume air services from today.
