There have been mass protests against racism following the death of George Floyd in America recently.
Several individuals have expressed their support to the ‘Black Lives Matter’ campaign. They have highlighted the importance of education to tackle racism. Time has come to stand up again racists, inequality and injustice.
Three police officers charged with aiding and abetting Floyd’s murder made their first appearance in court recently. Derek Chauvin, the officer who continued to kneel on Floyd’s neck as he pleaded that he could not breathe, has been charged with second-degree murder.
Protesters in America say that what happened to Floyd happens every day in their country, in education, in health services and in every area of American life. It’s time for us to stand up in George’s name and say: get your knee off our necks, they said in his memorial service.
Even sportspersons have voiced for it. West Indies cricketer Darren Sammy had also made an appeal to the International Cricket Council and other cricket boards to support the fight against social injustice and racism in the sport. We should teach our next generation to learn and respect all irrespective of caste, colour or creed. It is the right tribute to Floyd.
