Chennai: The Indian Coast Guard (ICG), rescued three people stranded in an island in Gulf of Mannar on Thursday.
A defence release here said they were rescued by the Coast Guard Hovercraft based at Mandapam.
At about 1000 hrs, a distress call was received from the Ramanathapuram District Collector that three people were stranded at Manalli Tivu Island.
The rescue operation was undertaken in the challenging weather conditions caused by Cyclone Burevi.
Strong winds, continuous rains and low visibility posed serious challenges for the crew to locate the boat and undertake the operation.
However, the Hovercraft persisted with the search in and around the island, and was able to locate the boat and subsequently rescued the distressed crew.
The trio had ventured into the sea on 1 December and due to an engine problem, they could not start the boat and were stranded at the island for the last three days.
All the three stranded people were provided with warm clothes, first aid, enough fluids and refreshments.
They were brought to Coast Guard Station, Mandapam, and were handed over to State Officials at 12.30 hrs.
