Chennai: Tamilnadu is seeing a surge in Covid cases for the past few days and reported 1,631 new infections on Friday, including an imported case from Malaysia. The total number of cases in the State so far stood at 26,30,592.
Tamilnadu Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan has urged all the District Collectors and the Commissioner of Greater Chennai Corporation to be on alert as the State is showing a rising trend in Covid-19 cases – from about 1,500 a day to above 1,600.
In his message to Collectors, he said, “What is worrying is that instead of earlier week changes linked to increase in number of tests on weekdays, this rise is due to gradual increase on positivity.”
The highest number of cases were reported in Coimbatore (235), followed by 174 in Chennai. Erode and Chengalpattu also saw a surge and reported 137 and 133 respectively. While the overall TPR stood at 1 per cent, the highest of 2.1 per cent was reported in Thanjavur. Chennai also saw a surge in TPR from 0.8 per cent to 0.9 per cent.
Till vaccination covers substantial population, monitoring of persons in crowded places enforcing Covid behaviour and contact tracing in cases of emergence of clusters assumes importance. Similarly vaccinating maximum persons to create immunity among those not exposed is important, Radhakrishnan said.
