Chennai: As part of a State-wide crackdown against the illegal sale of banned gutka and other contraband products, Tamilnadu police nabbed 6,623 people and seized ‘goods’ worth Rs 29 crore from them.
During the past 21 days’ hunt for drugs, illegal lottery and banned tobacco products, the Tamilnadu police conducted searches at various places, sources said.
According to a press release from the State police, 6,623 suspects were arrested since 6 December during the drive. The police seized heroin worth Rs 23 crore, gutkha worth Rs 4.20 crore and ganja worth Rs 1.8 crore.
As part of the operation, police confiscated 23 kg of heroin worth 23 crore in Thoothukudi district.
In another operation, police nabbed 871 offenders who were involved in 816 cases of selling ganja.
Meanwhile, the police have also asked the public to call on ‘100’ and ‘112’ if they find anyone involved in the lottery and selling of banned products.
